I didn&#8217;t have a problem with browsing the web, because most of my stuff was through Google Services and was over SSL. Everything except Search itself.<\/p>\n<p>I started poking around to see what happens if you force https on a Google Search, and it turns out you&#8217;re redirected to:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/encrypted.google.com\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/encrypted.google.com<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then I wondered how to make this my default search engine without the use of plugins. It turns out it&#8217;s very simple.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do a Google Search using the above URL, and you&#8217;ll notice the basic format is:\u00c2\u00a0<strong>https:\/\/encrypted.google.com\/search?<\/strong>&lt;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/gsa\/answer\/6329265?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=6329264#4134d4ec-c7f1-4eff-ae65-b171e689ca5a\" target=\"_blank\">insert-a-bunch-of-parameters<\/a>&gt;<strong>&amp;q=&lt;query&gt;<\/strong>. We are just interested in the bolded part of that fake URL:\u00c2\u00a0<strong>https:\/\/encrypted.google.com\/search?q=&lt;query&gt;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In Chrome OS, click the <strong>Wrench<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0menu, click <strong>Options<\/strong>, then go to <strong>Basics<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0and find the <strong>Search<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0section. Click on <strong>Manage search engines&#8230;<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0button.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll get a window with all the Search Engines that your Chrome OS knows about. At the bottom of the &#8220;Other search engines&#8221; list, you&#8217;ll see a row for adding a new search engine.\n<ol>\n<li>In &#8220;<strong>Add a new search engine<\/strong>&#8220;, put something like: <strong>Google SSL<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In &#8220;<strong>Keyword<\/strong>&#8220;, put something like: <strong>encrypted.google.com<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In &#8220;<strong>URL with %s in place of query<\/strong>&#8220;, put\u00c2\u00a0the URL we made from above:\u00c2\u00a0<strong>https:\/\/encrypted.google.com\/search?q=%s<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hit Enter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hover over the newly created search engine entry, and click <strong>Make Default<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0when the button appears over the URL column.<\/li>\n<li>Then try out a new search in the Omnibox and it should be SSL&#8217;d through Google&#8217;s SSL Beta search service.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That&#8217;s all there is to it. You can add more search parameters if you like via the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/gsa\/answer\/6329265?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=6329264#4134d4ec-c7f1-4eff-ae65-b171e689ca5a\" target=\"_blank\">Google Search parameter documentation<\/a>. Also, you can (and should) perform the same steps on your desktop version of Chrome Browser as well.
