I came into work today, and was met with some people telling me that our site had been blacklisted. It took a lot of runaround, and everyone denying involvement, but it sorta worked itself out. So what exactly happened?
I’m sitting here at my desk, and a package is delivered to me, for my boss, from Dell. But my boss is gone this week, and since it’s from Dell, and I’m the IT Admin, I open it up.
Turns out, there is a Dell Solar Charger for mobile devices in there.
I spent a good 45-60 minutes on the internet searching Dell.com and talking with the Tech Support to figure out how this got here, and where I could get my own. Why? Because it’s the closest thing to a wireless power supply that I can get right now that would let me charge my phone anywhere. And (after being stranded in a bad part of Dallas, TX, at 2am, with a dead phone and sitting outside a sex-toy shop/tattoo parlor) I need to be able to charge my phone – anywhere.
This is my first review of a technology product, and I’ve only had it for about 3 hours, but there are some things I already have to say about it. Read the rest of this entry »
Update…
Unfortunately, LogMeIn figured out they forgot about that page, I guess when people started reading this post and hitting it on their servers. They have removed the text status as well as all the others, and I can’t figure out why they would do such a thing.
I’m also not sure what they’re offering as an alternative either. So if you know, please leave a comment below. Thanks.
Depreciated Process…
A while back, I started a project called tsn.lcl or tsnlocal, but gave up on it when my electricity bill hit $400 in a month.
Today, I decided to fix up the domain name and get it back on the internet – at least to remove it from GoDaddy’s Parking Page – where they’re making money, not me, off of it.
When I got it published I noticed that none of the Hamachi Web Status images worked anymore, and that the link to such an image, redirected to their login page for your Hamachi Management Dashboard. However, upon further investigation, I found that there was not only an Image version of those status instances, but also a text version.
I really wanted to show the online status of all my machines again, so I wrote my own php script to parse that text data, and created some simple images to show on the website based on the returned status.
So here’s the code so you can do the same thing… Read the rest of this entry »
For a while I have been using AT&T’s Xpress Mail to get email, calendar, and contact access from my work PC to my AT&T Tilt phone. But this past week, I kept getting a “Cannot Find Server” error on my Xpress Mail desktop client.
I searched the forums over on AT&T’s website and lots of people were having the same problem, and have been since July or so. However, no one was able to figure out a solution for it, nor could they get help from AT&T with it, who apparently didn’t even know there was a problem.
Well, I gave the thread a week to see if anyone had any more information, but there was none. So I decided to see if reinstalling the desktop client would do anything to help…
IT DID!
If you’re having this problem, go download and reinstall the desktop app by logging in here. Once you do that, just re-login to your desktop client again, then go to your phone and re-register it to your desktop client, and you should be good to go.
I tried to register on the forums to post this message, but I couldn’t get my email address verified because the link they sent me always comes back as invalid.
Frankly, I’ve never been impressed with AT&T’s support or their help on anything, and I’ve always found the solution for them – either while on the phone with the tech support person, or before I even call them about it. Their phone/data service is acceptable, but their user support eats ballsack.
Well, this was easily one of the best Quakecons I’ve been to since I started going in 2004.
The Pre-registration line went smooth without any hitches as far as my small group was concerned…and they let us in early to put our things down. I got the spot I wanted, and was able to set out placeholders to get my friends around me. I think that’s what made it better this year – sitting with the people from the-spot.net.
When we came back the next day, there were a couple interesting case mods out in the open, but nothing that as impressive as the Optimus Prime of 2007.
Someone did build an idea that [wizard] and I had a while back, just didn’t have have money to fund it…a multi-PC computer mod, called The Quad. I think it should have won 1st place in the Custom Case category of the Case Mod Contest.
Instead, 1st place was taken by a guy who snagged a mortar shell box from an antique store, and turned it into a computer case – which was also a cool concept and design. I liked them both.
Friday, I played in a Street Fighter IV tournament against [wizard], = SIR JAD= and Bad-Mojo. It was the last one of the day, and we were the only ones to sign up for that round, so it was all against friends. Mojo beat JAD, I beat [wizard]…then Mojo beat me. Later on, Doug (one of wizard’s co-workers) caught a yellow hat for him at that booth’s raffle. [Wizard] turned it into the Hat of Douchebaggery.
Another good thing on Friday was that Jenna stopped by, and again on Saturday when she found out the school is closed and she couldn’t register for classes. So she hung out and I learned a little bit about the Mac – but more importantly found out that there is a terminal window that accepts linux commands. I was looking like a hardcore n00b when I couldn’t do the simplest things in a Mac like make a new folder…until I was able to do it all from the command line. It’s so nice to have a girl that gets the gaming culture – she is a WoW player, herself. But we couldn’t get the 3.1.3 client installed to connect to the local server there. So I finally was able to set her up on ShakesPeer (dc++ client for Mac) and in IRC. Then she started having a little more fun downloading music and stuff.
Saturday we hit up the PC Perspectives workshop and caught all kinds of free stuff. I managed a shirt and mousepad. [Wizard] caught a 1200 W power supply, and Sarge caught a heatsync – and he doesn’t even own a PC. There was one douche right in front of me, standing on his chair that caught all kinds of stuff that would have come right to me. Next year, I think they’re going to make everyone stay on the floor – several people almost fell on the computer used for the demonstrations – which was right where I was sitting.
There were only two glitches during the whole Quakecon event that were public – Thursday night they took the network down for about 1.5 hours…and Saturday night there was a power outage because a car hit a pole in Grapevine somewhere. But all in all, it was a pretty fun experience, and I’m glad for that – because they had gotten progressively worse for me, and this was the last one I was going to if the trend continued.
Well done Quakecon people!
